More Than Gold

Have you ever had one of those days when all you can do is notice your shortcomings? Every single way that you feel unworthy or less-than sticks out like a sore thumb. The kind and affirming things that people say just bounce off of you, going in one ear and out the other. Knowing and believing that you have value is one thing. Feeling that you have value is a whole other ballpark.

In these moments of distress, it's very easy to turn to people. The community around you may be very great at encouraging you. The people God has placed in your life to point you to him are just sometimes really efficient at that job. They can fill you up with affirmations and hugs and real love. The community around you can also be one that lacks in this area. You can go through these days feeling alone, like your pain is unnoticed by the ones you most want to notice. You can be desiring that attention so much, and coming up empty, waiting.

Either way, the good or the bad, your community has no power over your worth. No single person, situation, feeling, status, or action defines you. Your shortcomings are not what God sees when He looks at you, even if that's what you notice. Even if that's what the people around you notice. Even if you are a being full of flaws, living a life of errors and mistakes and sins. Because this is something true, Jesus is alive. Because of the ways humanity fails, the sacrifice of Christ is important. Because He made the decision before the beginning of time to die for our sake, we have value. It can, in no way, come from anything less than Him, and we shouldn't want it to. Trading in a value that comes from God for a "value" that comes from people or success or anything else is like trading in pure gold for those colorful pieces of monopoly paper money. One has true worth in the world. Wherever you go, no one can dispute the fact that gold is valuable. Monopoly money may have numbers printed on it. It has the illusion of value, and in the game, it can feel so important. Once the game is over, however, those pastel-colored papers have zero value. They are flimsy pieces of paper, easily torn and crumpled.

This is not where we should put our worth. Instead, look to the One who values you more than gold, more than life. In His eyes, you can never loose your beauty. You can never be unlovable.
"His love has made you more than enough. So go ahead and be who He made you to be, and live like you're loved." (Hawk Nelson)
